If your bar stools are looking run down or worn out, you may not need to get rid of them just yet! Before taking that drastic measure, consider reupholstering your stools to breathe some life back into them. You might be wondering how to reupholster a bar stool and whether it can be worth it. In this article, we will show you that this do-it-yourself project can bring you the luxury bar stools you are looking for, at a reduced cost!
What Do You Need to Reupholster a Bar Stool?
Here is a list of supplies you will need to get started:
- Screwdriver (Phillips or flathead)
- Staple remover or flathead screwdriver
- New upholstery fabric
- Upholstery stapler and staples
- Scissors
- Foam padding, if your old padding is worn
- Optional batting for a softer edge
- Marker or chalk
- Measuring tape
With these items, you just need a little time and patience to carry you through the project.
How to Reupholster a Bar Stool
Below, we will outline the step-by-step instructions for reupholstering your bar stools.
Step 1: Remove the Seat
After flipping the stool upside down, you can use your screwdriver to detach the seat from its frame. Be sure to keep track of where you put the screws, like in a small container.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fabric
Turn over the seat once it is off, and take a good look at its underside. Remove the staples (or tacks) that have the old fabric secured into place. You can do this by using a staple remover or a flathead screwdriver. This step can take more time than you expect, so be patient and careful. Also, a bonus tip: if the fabric is still in good shape, you can use it as a template for cutting the new fabric.
Step 3: Check the Padding
Once you are done removing the fabric, check out the state of the foam padding. Replacing the foam padding is recommended if the old one is flat, crumbling, or even smells musty. Matching it to the shape of the seat, you can cut a new piece of foam. If you also add a layer of batting on top of the foam, this can create a smoother finish and softness in the seat.
Step 4: Cut the New Fabric
Prepare a clean surface, and then lay your new fabric onto it face down. Place the seat upside down on top of it, and use a marker or chalk to trace a circle around it. You should leave approximately three to four inches of extra fabric around its perimeter. The extra fabric will make wrapping and stapling the fabric easier for you.
Step 5: Staple the Fabric
Time to finally attach the new fabric! Pick a side to start on, then pull the fabric tightly while putting the first staple in the center. Repeat this on the opposite side of the fabric, being sure to pull firmly. Keep working around the seat in a criss-crossed pattern while making sure the fabric is snug and wrinkleless. Note that the corners may need small pleats to help the fabric lay flat. To keep it looking smooth, take your time!
Step 6: Trim Excess Fabric
After securing and stapling every part, trim any excess fabric on the underside. However, do not cut too close to the staples. The goal is to have a clean edge but enough material to keep the fabric stable.
Step 7: Reattach the Seat
The best part is that you are ready to put the seat back onto its frame! Locate the original screws and use your screwdriver to reattach the seat. Once you are done, flip it back upright and take in your handy work!
Congratulations! Just with a few tools and fresh fabric, your bar stool is brand new.
Why Reupholster Instead of Replace?
Frankly, buying a new set of bar stools can be expensive. Plus, by reupholstering the ones you own, you get to keep the stool frame you already adore! Except now, they have a fresh look. Whatever your exact taste in aesthetic is, you can make it happen by reupholstering the stool yourself.
