Tin Can Wind Chimes

This project is fun and utilizes your recycling! For this craft, you will need upcycled tin cans from soda cans to canned food containers, a hammer, a nail, string, and any painting materials you may want. Start by painting the cans in any of the colors you’ve chosen. Glitter can be added to the paint once the first coat has dried to add a fun, sparkling effect! Allow the cans to dry either on the grass outside, or on a large sheet in case there is a mess during the painting process. Once you’ve painted the cans the way you’d like and they’ve completely dried, use the hammer and nail to create a hole at the center of the bottom surface of each can. When every can has a hole in the bottom, it’s time to tie the string through each of them. Cut one piece of string per can and be sure to measure how high the chime will be hanging, and how much string you need for the cans to sit at interval heights. Next, thread the string through the hole in the can and tie a knot at the base so it won’t slip through after it’s hung. If you notice the string isn’t holding at the base of the can, super glue help guides can detail the steps to securing each piece of string with heavy-duty glue. If you decide to glue the base, be meticulous in your application to avoid contact with your skin or clothes. Once all your cans are threaded with string, combine the strings together at the base where the chimes will hang. If your tin cans have lids, put nuts or rocks inside of the cans for extra sound effects!

Tie-Dye Pillowcases

tie dye pillowcase

Tie-dyeing is a fun and creative craft to do this summer, whether you’re making shirts, pillowcases or even gift bags! The process requires a kit from any craft store, the fabric you’re dying, plastic gloves, a cover for the area you’re dying on, and some hot water. First, soak or wash the fabric without drying it so that it’s wet for the application. Next, tie the rubber bands around the fabric either the way the kit shows, or any way you think would be cool! Then, use the dye from the kit to color the fabric however you want! You don’t have to use the gloves if you don’t mind a skin tint for the day, but they are available in most tie-dyeing kits if you want them. Once every inch of the fabric has been colored, set the projects aside for about six hours. After they have had time to dry, wash them out in hot water and throw them in the dryer. Once they’re dry, they’re done! You have awesome new tie-dyed shirts, pillowcases and even gift bags to use all summer long.

Flower Crowns

Every princess needs a crown, so why not a flower crown? For this project, you’ll need construction paper, fake flowers from a craft store, scissors, colored pencils or markers and super glue. Cut the pieces of construction paper down the middle vertically so that the pieces are long. Wrap a piece of paper around your child’s head to see if it fits or needs to be altered. If the piece is not long enough, combine two strips with super glue. Color any area of the paper you want before gluing down the flowers, as the coloring process will be much more difficult once they have been attached. After the crowns have been colored, use a super glue help guide to see the best way to attach objects without getting glue on unwanted areas. Attach the flowers around the crown either on the construction paper completely or sticking up in the air for a regal effect. Allow the super glue to dry fully before trying the crown on. Once it’s dry, your princess will have her own beautiful crown for all her adventures!
