Outdoor Safety Tips for Kids

It’s no secret that spending time outdoors can be a very advantageous health-happy thing for your kids. As humans, we need to spend a certain amount of time out in the sun, playing outside so we can enjoy the benefits. It is scientifically proven that spending time outside makes kids happier, more sociable, and more intelligent. It’s overall a great thing for a growing kid’s mind.

Crazy Skates team wants to encourage the healthy habits of kids playing outdoors with custom roller skates. But there are a few safety tips to consider first. It’s important to spend a few moments going over the best ways to be safe, so your kid can enjoy all of the benefits of playing outside without incurring any of the risks. Check out some tips below!

1. Know the Basics of First Aid

It’s always better to be prepared. Teach yourself and your child the basics of first aid to learn how to identify and treat certain illnesses that can come from being outside. This includes getting injured or encountering a dangerous plant.

Teach your kids how to respond in emergency situations that include:

  • Hypothermia
  • Stroke
  • Dehydration
  • Food poisoning

If your kids are traveling far, ask them to bring a first aid kit with them. You never know when someone will need a band-aid or some Neosporin.

2. Encourage Proper Sports Gear

According to Healthline, organized sports can come with a risk of injury that can be lowered by getting your child to wear protective gear. In fact, it is a requirement in most organized sports organizations and on teams. Kids who engage in active sports should protect themselves with approved equipment before playing. Make sure they are fitted into their helmets, footwear, kneepads, and eyewear if needed.

3. Know Bike Riding Rules

Riding a bicycle is a great way to get exercise throughout the whole body, and it can give kids a sense of freedom when they ride. But there are rules to the road that need to be followed, especially when your child plans on riding on the street.

Always:

  • Obey traffic signals just as a car would
  • Wait for cars that are about to turn or about to open their doors
  • Ride in the same direction as traffic
  • Avoid riding your bike on the sidewalks

The key to riding your bike safely is paying attention. Make sure that your child understands that bike riding is a responsibility and to always put safety over goofing around.

4. Make Sure They Stay Hydrated

Playing outside all day tends to wear on one’s thirst. In hot weather, the body needs extra water to stay healthy and hydrated. Becoming dehydrated is a serious health risk that should be avoided at all costs. Make sure you send your kid outside winter camping with at least one bottle of water. Water bottles can be age-appropriate. For example, an older sibling can be put in charge of holding all of the water for everyone and making sure everyone gets enough to drink.

5. Know When It’s Time to Come Inside

Playing outside is fun, but don’t force your kids to be out there for too long. Especially if the weather is too hot or too cold. Plus, there may be some days where your child just isn’t in the mood to play outside. This is okay. If they have a meltdown at the park or just end up in a cranky mood, you can take them home. If you force them to keep playing even when they don’t want to, their love for outside activities might dwindle.
